Heading to the Caribbean side? Get ready for reggae, amazing food, and turquoise waters. Here is how to reach Talamanca like a pro.
⚠️ CRITICAL: The “Two Puerto Viejos” Error
Costa Rica has two towns with this name. When buying your ticket, ALWAYS specify Puerto Viejo de TALAMANCA (Limon). If you just say “Puerto Viejo”, you might end up in Sarapiquí (Northern jungle), 4 hours away from the beach!
1 Departure Terminal
Buses depart from Terminal Atlántico Norte (also known as the “San Carlos Station”) in Barrio México. It’s a busy area, so take an Uber directly to the entrance.
2 Schedules & Tickets
Buses are quite frequent. You can buy tickets at the MEPE counter inside the terminal. Cards are usually accepted, but carry cash just in case.
- Daily: 06:00, 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00
The bus will make a quick stop in Limón city before heading south to Puerto Viejo.
3 The “Limon Stop” Safety
💡 Survival Tip from the Mae
“Listen mae: The bus stops for 15 minutes at the Limón terminal. Do NOT leave your valuables (camera, passport, laptop) on the bus if you get off to stretch your legs. Thieves are fast. Keep your ‘bulto’ with you at all times. Also, try the ‘Patí’ (spicy meat pastry) sold by vendors in Limón—it’s the real Caribbean fuel!”
