Public buses in Costa Rica are operated by licensed companies and depart from main terminals in San José. Search your route on this site, then go to the listed terminal and buy your ticket directly with cash. Always arrive at least 30 minutes early, especially on weekends and holidays.

Bus tickets cost between $3 and $15 USD depending on the distance. San José to La Fortuna costs about $7, to Monteverde about $7.50, to Puerto Viejo about $12, and to Manuel Antonio about $10. All prices listed on this site are in USD equivalent at official rates.

Yes, public buses in Costa Rica are generally safe for tourists when using official licensed operators. Stick to the companies listed on this site, keep your valuables in your lap, and avoid traveling late at night. Major intercity routes are well-established and heavily used.

For most routes you can buy tickets at the terminal on the day. However, for popular routes during weekends and holidays (especially Monteverde, La Fortuna, Pacific coast), we recommend buying 1 day in advance. Tortuguero requires advance planning due to the boat connection.

Most buses depart from two main areas: Terminal Atlántico Norte (formerly 7-10, for northern routes like La Fortuna and Monteverde) and Terminal Caribeños (for Caribbean routes like Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero). Tracopa Terminal serves Pacific coast routes like Manuel Antonio. Always confirm with the official company.

Most official bus companies only accept Costa Rican colones (₡). Some tourist-oriented services may accept USD but often at unfavorable exchange rates. Always carry colones. You can exchange at banks or ATMs (BAC and BN ATMs are widely available).
