On the map, La Fortuna and Monteverde look like neighbors. In real life there’s a volcano and a 30-kilometer lake in the way, and the road around it is long and twisty. The fix every local recommends has a silly name — jeep-boat-jeep — and it’s one of the best-value transfers in Costa Rica. Here’s how it works in 2026.

This guide explains what the jeep-boat-jeep actually is (spoiler: no jeeps), what it costs, when it leaves, and how it compares with the bus and driving. If you’re still on your way to La Fortuna, start with our San José to La Fortuna bus guide.

What Is the Jeep-Boat-Jeep?

It’s a three-part shared transfer between La Fortuna (Arenal) and Monteverde (Santa Elena):

  1. Van from your La Fortuna hotel to the dock at Lake Arenal — a short ride on paved road.
  2. Boat across Lake Arenal, roughly 30–40 minutes, with Arenal Volcano behind you on a clear day.
  3. Van from the far shore up into the mountains to your hotel in Monteverde — about an hour and a half, partly on gravel.

Door to door it takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. The “jeeps” were real 4x4s back in the day; now the land legs are air-conditioned tourist minibuses. Same idea, more comfortable.

My Take: Think of it as a transfer that includes a free lake tour. For the price of a shuttle, you get the best views of the whole trip.

Price and Schedule (2026)

🚤 Jeep-boat-jeep at a glance

  • ✅ Departures: two a day in each direction — one in the morning (around 8:00–8:30 AM) and one in the afternoon (around 2:00–2:30 PM)
  • ✅ Price: roughly $33–55 per person for the shared service, depending on the operator and time of day
  • ✅ Duration: about 3.5–4 hours hotel to hotel
  • ✅ Pickup: at hotels in the main areas of La Fortuna and Monteverde
  • ⚠️ Luggage: usually one suitcase plus one carry-on per person

Several companies run the same basic route. Morning departures are usually a few dollars cheaper than afternoon ones. Private versions exist too, priced per vehicle — worth it only for bigger groups.

🧭 Local tip: Book through your hotel or directly with an operator a day or two ahead. In high season (December–April) the morning boat sells out.

My Take: Take the morning departure. Clearer skies over the volcano, calmer lake, and you arrive in Monteverde with the afternoon free.

Why Not the Public Bus?

We love buses — it’s in our name — but this is the one route where the public bus doesn’t make sense for most travelers. There’s no direct service; the public route goes around the lake with several changes and can take most of a day.

Bus vs jeep-boat-jeep

  • ❌ Public bus: multiple transfers, long waits, most of a day on the road
  • ✅ Jeep-boat-jeep: one booking, hotel pickup, about 3.5–4 hours, lake views included

If you’re on a very tight budget and have time to burn, the bus is possible. For everyone else, the few extra dollars buy you back a full day of your trip.

My Take: The only people I’d send on the public bus are hardcore budget travelers who want the adventure. Everyone else: boat.

Driving Around the Lake Instead

With a rental car you can’t take the boat (it’s for passengers, not cars). You’ll drive around Lake Arenal through the town of Tilarán and then up into the mountains.

  • ✅ The lakeside road is beautiful — stop at the viewpoints and cafés
  • ⚠️ It’s slow and winding; plan on around 3.5–4 hours with stops
  • ⚠️ Parts of the climb toward Monteverde from this side are still gravel — a higher-clearance car is more comfortable
  • ❌ Don’t do the mountain section after dark; fog rolls in fast

My Take: If you already have a car, the lake drive is a nice road trip. Leave by 9 AM and enjoy it.

What the Trip Is Really Like

The first van

Pickup windows can be loose — the van collects people from several hotels, so be ready 15 minutes early and don’t panic if it’s a little late. The drive to the dock is short.

The boat

Covered boats cross the lake while your luggage rides at the back under a tarp. Grab a seat on the side facing the volcano as you pull away from the dock. If it’s clear, Arenal looks perfect behind you — this is the photo everyone takes.

The second van

This is the bumpy part: a climb from the lake up into the Tilarán mountains, including gravel stretches. It’s safe with professional drivers, but it’s curvy. Motion sickness tablets before this leg if you need them.

My Take: Eat a light breakfast, keep a jacket handy (Monteverde is cold), and your phone charged for the lake.

Packing and Luggage Tips

  • ✅ One suitcase + one small bag per person is the standard allowance
  • ✅ A rain cover for your backpack — it rides on the boat deck
  • ✅ Warm layer and rain jacket in your day bag; you’ll need them on arrival
  • ⚠️ Surfboards, bikes and oversized gear: ask the operator before booking

My Take: Keep your passport, cash and electronics in the small bag you hold on the boat. Everything else can ride in the back.

Doing It in Reverse: Monteverde to La Fortuna

It works exactly the same the other way, with morning and afternoon departures from Monteverde hotels. Most operators don’t recommend a same-day round trip — it’s a transfer, not a day tour.

From La Fortuna you can head back to San José by direct bus (see our San José ⇄ La Fortuna schedule) or continue north and west. From Monteverde, Transmonteverde buses run to San José — check our San José ⇄ Monteverde schedule.

Planning your time up there? Our Monteverde guide without a car covers the reserves, night walks and what to pack.

My Take: La Fortuna first, Monteverde second works best — you end the loop closer to the Pacific beaches.

Final Checklist

  • ✅ Book 1–2 days ahead (more in high season)
  • ✅ Choose the morning departure
  • ✅ Be at your hotel entrance 15 minutes before pickup
  • ✅ Warm layer and rain jacket in your day bag
  • ✅ Motion sickness tablets for the mountain leg if needed

Pura vida — enjoy the lake. It’s the most scenic commute you’ll ever take.
