Uvita is where the South Pacific gets wild: a whale-tail sandbar you can walk on at low tide, humpbacks jumping offshore for most of the year, and waterfalls hiding in the jungle behind town. The good news, mae? You don’t need a car to get there. Tracopa buses roll down the coast from San José all day long, and Uvita is a stop on the way. Here’s exactly how the San José to Uvita bus works in 2026: the terminal, every departure, the price, where you get off and how to get back.

For today’s timetable, keep our San José ⇄ Uvita bus schedule open in another tab. Everything below matches that page, last verified in September 2026.

San José to Uvita by Bus at a Glance

🚌 San José → Uvita in 30 seconds

  • 🚌 Company: Tracopa
  • 🏢 Terminal: Terminal Tracopa, south of downtown San José
  • 🕕 Departures: 14 a day, between 5:30 AM and 6:40 PM
  • ⏱️ Ride time: about 4 to 4.5 hours
  • 💵 Price: around ₡6,650 (about $13), cash at the terminal
  • 📍 Where you get off: on the highway in Uvita, by Restaurante Flor de la Sabana

One thing to understand before you go: there is no dedicated San José–Uvita bus line. Uvita is a stop on Tracopa’s long-distance buses that run down the Costanera Sur (Route 34) toward Palmar, Sierpe, Golfito and Paso Canoas on the Panama border. That’s actually great news for you, because it’s why there are so many departures.

My Take: When you buy your ticket, say “Uvita” clearly. You’re riding a bus that’s going much farther, so the driver and the ticket agent need to know where you’re getting off.

Where the Bus Leaves: Terminal Tracopa

All the Uvita buses leave from Terminal Tracopa, south of downtown San José near Plaza González Víquez. It’s the same terminal used by the buses to Quepos and Manuel Antonio, so if you’ve read our Tracopa guide to Manuel Antonio, you already know the place.

San José has no central bus station. Each company runs its own terminal, and the old Terminal 7-10 closed in April 2025, so ignore any older blog that sends you there. Take an Uber or a red taxi straight to “Terminal Tracopa” and you’ll be fine.

  • ✅ Coming from SJO airport? Plan on 30–45 minutes or more to reach the terminal, longer at rush hour. Our SJO arrival guide covers Uber, taxis and the airport bus.
  • ✅ Arrive early: at least 30 minutes before departure, and 45–60 minutes on Friday afternoons, weekend mornings and holidays
  • ⚠️ Watch your bags: terminals in San José are busy, and distracted travelers are easy targets

Before your first trip, read our San José bus terminals survival guide. Five minutes of reading can save you a bad start.

My Take: Don’t walk to the terminal from downtown with a big backpack, especially after dark. A short Uber costs very little and gets you to the door.

Last verified: September 2026. Arrival times are estimates and depend on traffic, roadwork and weather. Always confirm at the terminal, or check the live Uvita schedule before you travel.

My Take: Notice the 7:30 AM and the 7:31 AM? They’re two different buses. The 7:30 AM is the international service heading to David, Panama. Tell the ticket agent you’re going to Uvita and let them put you on the right one.

Which Bus Should You Take?

With 14 departures, the question isn’t whether you can get to Uvita today. It’s which bus fits your plans.

  • 🌅 Best overall: 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM. You arrive before lunch or early afternoon, with time to check in and walk to the beach before sunset.
  • ✈️ Landing at SJO in the morning: the 11:00 AM, 12:15 PM or 1:05 PM are realistic, depending on immigration and traffic
  • 🌧️ Green season (May–November): go early. Afternoon storms are common on the coast, and arriving in daylight is easier with luggage.
  • 🌙 Late buses (3:00 PM onward): they work, but you arrive after dark. Book a place close to the highway stop or arrange a taxi with your hotel.

The ride follows the Costanera Sur along the coast, past Quepos and Dominical, before reaching Uvita. Sit on the right-hand side heading south for the best ocean views on the stretches where the road hugs the coast.

My Take: I’d take one of the early morning buses every time. The 6:40 PM exists, but arriving close to 11 PM on a dark highway with your bags is nobody’s idea of pura vida.

Buying Tickets and What the Ride Is Like

According to our route page, Tracopa doesn’t sell tickets online for this route. You pay in cash (colones) at the terminal before boarding. US dollars may not be accepted, so hit an ATM before you go.

🎫 Ticket checklist

  • 🪙 Bring colones: around ₡6,650 per person, in small bills if you can
  • 🗣️ Say your stop: “Un boleto a Uvita, por favor”
  • 💺 Check your seat: tickets usually show a seat number (asiento)
  • 📸 Photograph your ticket: handy if you lose it or need to show the time later
  • 📅 Busy dates: on long weekends, Semana Santa and the Christmas holidays, buy your ticket the day before if you can

The buses are standard long-distance coaches. Big backpacks and suitcases usually go in the luggage hold underneath at no extra charge. Keep your passport, phone and wallet in a small bag on your lap, not in the overhead rack. Surfboards and oversized items may need special arrangements, so call the company ahead.

Bring a light jacket for the air conditioning, water and a snack. Buses usually make a short stop along the way, but don’t count on a full meal.

My Take: Download Google Maps offline before you leave San José. Signal comes and goes on the coast, and you’ll want to watch the blue dot as you get close to Uvita.

Arriving in Uvita: Where the Bus Drops You

There’s no big bus station in Uvita. The buses stop on the Costanera Sur highway, by Restaurante Flor de la Sabana. From there, Uvita spreads out in two directions: the small town center and many hotels on the inland side, and the road toward Bahía and the beach entrance of Marino Ballena National Park on the ocean side.

  • ✅ Ask the driver to let you know when you reach Uvita (“¿Me avisa en Uvita, por favor?”)
  • ✅ Check on a map how far your hotel is from the highway stop before you book
  • ⚠️ Many lodges are up in the hills above town on steep roads. For those, a taxi from the stop is the way to go.

My Take: If this is your first time and you’re traveling without a car, stay in town or in Bahía, close to the beach. You’ll walk to the park, the sodas and the tour offices, and you won’t depend on taxis every day.

Going Back: Uvita to San José

The return works the same way in reverse. Buses heading north to San José are Tracopa buses coming up the Costanera Sur from farther south, and they pick up passengers in Uvita along the highway. The ride back takes roughly the same 4 to 4.5 hours, ending at Terminal Tracopa.

Return times change and aren’t listed on our route page yet, so do this as soon as you arrive:

  • 1️⃣ Ask at your hotel or at the bus stop area for the current times back to San José
  • 2️⃣ Buy your return ticket a day or two ahead if you’re traveling on a Sunday or a holiday
  • 3️⃣ Be at the stop at least 30 minutes before the bus is due

My Take: Sunday afternoon buses back to the city fill up with Ticos returning from the beach. If you have a flight the next day, travel back a day early or take a morning bus.

Bus vs Shuttle vs Car to Uvita

The bus is by far the cheapest way to get from San José to Uvita, but it isn’t the only one.

Tracopa bus~4–4.5 h~$13 per personBudget travelers, solo, couples
Shared shuttle~3.5–4 hroughly $50–75 per personDoor-to-door without the terminal
Private transfer~3.5 hroughly $200–350 per vehicleFamilies, groups, late flights
Rental car~3.5–4 hvaries by seasonExploring the whole Costa Ballena

Shuttle and transfer prices are typical ranges reported by travel sites in 2026 and vary by company and season. Always check a current quote.

Already in Manuel Antonio? Uvita is a short hop south on the same coastal highway. Our San José to Manuel Antonio bus guide covers that part of the coast, and the budget math in Costa Rica on a budget by bus shows how much the bus saves you over a two-week trip.

My Take: For two people with backpacks, the bus saves you over $100 compared to a shared shuttle, for maybe 30 minutes more on the road. Still undecided? Our bus vs shuttle vs Uber guide breaks it down.

Uvita Without a Car: The Whale Tail and the Whales

Uvita is a town you can enjoy on foot, and its big two attractions are easy to reach without wheels.

🐋 Marino Ballena National Park

  • 🏖️ The Whale Tail (Punta Uvita): a sandbar shaped like a whale’s tail, walkable only around low tide. Check a tide chart before you go.
  • 🎟️ Entrance: the Playa Uvita entrance in Bahía is the one for the Whale Tail. The fee for foreigners has been about $6 plus tax; confirm the current fee at the gate.
  • 🐳 Whale season: humpbacks from the northern hemisphere visit roughly December to April, and from the southern hemisphere roughly July to November
  • 🚤 Whale-watching tours: boat tours leave from the beach in Bahía. Prices vary by operator and by whether park entry is included.

Dominical, the surf town just north of Uvita, is a short ride away on the same highway, and a nice day trip if you want bigger waves and a different vibe.

My Take: Plan your Whale Tail walk around the tide, not around your schedule. Arrive in Uvita, check the tide chart that night, and go the next morning when the timing works. The whales don’t read calendars either, so book your boat tour for early in your stay and keep a backup day.
